Altio will be exhibiting and delivering a technical session this year. Our booth is #439, and is located in the SOA Village section of the pavilion, near to Sun’s stand.
Our talk: Is There A Place For Applets in Web 2.0? (by Jim Crossley and Gary Thompson, Tuesday 6th May, 15.20h)
Java™ technology-based applets have been around since Java 1.0, and provides a way to deliver dynamic functionality to users inside their browser.
The last few years have seen an enormous explosion in Web 2.0 applications that provide users with the kind of rich, dynamic interfaces previously only seen in desktop applications. However most Web 2.0 applications are written using AJAX, not applets. Why is this?
Are applets being unjustly ignored by Rich Internet Application developers or do they still deserve their lingering reputation for being slow and ugly? Is there a place for Java applets? Why use applets and not AJAX? Can the two technologies work together to give the best of both worlds? What advantages do Java applets have over AJAX applications, and do end users really need to know the technology used if the application delivers what is required?
The session will cover the following topics:
- The Java browser plug-in - slowly getting there.
- The applet security model - a help or a hindrance?
- Applet performance - perception versus reality.
- Using Swing to provide rich user interfaces in applets.
- Applet gotchas - things that you need to know.
- How applets are benefiting from renewed desktop Java interest and improvements.
Attendees should be Java developers, but do not need any previous experience of developing Java applets.
